Connect Amarillo reports cattle rustling remains a problem hurting ranchers pocketbook across the cattle belt.

H.L. Dempsey, a special ranger with the Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association says it affects more ranches than people realize. He’s currently investigating missing cattle reports from three counties totaling 34 head of cattle.

Dempsey says technology makes it easier for rustlers to get onto a ranch, load up a trailer and be across state lines in a few hours. He says pens located close to paved roads also make it easier to rustlers to steal cattle.

"Some people may have a set of pens right on the road. I've worked cases where you can see they pulled off a paved road to a full set of pens right there and loaded 'em up."

The best way to catch rustlers is to rely on your neighbors. Keep an eye out for suspicious trucks and note tag numbers and vehicle descriptions.
